One reason we respect our Constitution is that it fosters ethical values. The Preamble says: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice and secure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.” These values are a sound basis for nation building. In a more profound way, Jesus set forth kingdom values. He not only taught them, He modeled them, and showed His love by healing the hurting. He ended his mission by dying on the cross and rising again to atone for our sins. Before He left, He declared that His mission fulfilled what the Scriptures had predicted long ago. Four times in Luke’s Gospel, chapter 24, Jesus stressed that the Scriptures were true and reliable. He said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled. He said, “It was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations. Since Jesus Himself accepted the Scriptures as accurate and reliable, we can certainly trust them today.
