Chicago basketball fans go wild when D Rose hits a winning three-point basket. They admire his skill to help the team win. In a far more profound way, we admire God’s attributes. He’s far more praiseworthy than any athlete is, not only because of who He is, but also because of what God has done in the past, is doing today, and promises to do in the future, especially for those in a right relationship with Him. The author of Psalm 146 gives some powerful reasons why he praised God. Here are just a few of them: God made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He keeps every promise forever. He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The LORD frees the prisoners and opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are weighed down. The LORD loves the godly and protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked. The LORD will reign forever.” Today we can join the psalmist in praise of God. But since we are God’s agents here on earth—His hands and feet—we can show our gratitude of God by letting His concerns become our agenda. We can become God’s agents to care for those in need—the hungry, immigrants, innocent prisoners, orphans, widows, and homeless, both in our country and around the world.
