Dungy led the Indianapolis Colts to win Super Bowl 41 in 2007, and like other champions, they celebrated at Disney. King David celebrated in a different way after his victories. He wrote a poem—Psalm 18. In it, he tells how at times he was almost defeated, but he did not give up. He knew from his close relationship with God, that God would not abandon him. Here is how he expressed his appreciation for God’s deliverance: “I love you LORD; you are my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies.” King David anticipates what believers in Christ can now expect from God. Based on the sacrifice Jesus made for our sins, God has declared His eternal love and commitment to those who accept His Son. Like David, we face difficulties. Yet also, like David, we count on God to bring us through. David knew from his prior intimate experiences with God that he could count on God to protect and provide for him. We can have that same confidence in God.
