A photographer dropping with the group noticed one man really enjoying the drop — until he reached for his parachute string. He did not have a parachute. In his excitement, he jumped without it — and perished. Sadly, his faith was in a parachute that did not exist. That was not true of Abram, the patriarch. He placed his faith in an unfailing God. We read in Gen. 15, “The LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great. You will have son of your own who will be your heir. Then the LORD took Abram outside and said to him, ‘Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have.’ The Bible then records, ‘Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith.'” Abram placed his faith in God who cannot fail. God designed us in such a way that we can never function effectively without God. What’s more, faith is the only way we can connect with God in order to draw from His sufficiency. Furthermore, only Jesus Christ, God’s Son can connect us to God. It is why Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
