Dr. Robert McQuilkin left his job as a university president to care for his wife with Alzheimer’s disease. He said he did it to keep his wedding vow. He had promised before God to stick by his wife as long as they both should live. If a wife can rely on a husband to keep his wedding vow, how much more can we rely on God to keep His promises to us? God promised to make Abram the father of a nation that would bring blessing to the world. But Abram needed a son to do this, and both he and his wife were old and childless. Despite this, Abram firmly believed that God would keep His word. Based on Abram’s strong faith in God’s promise, God declared him righteous. In Romans 4, the Apostle Paul explained Abram’s faith and the results: “Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this, he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do what ever He promises. And because of his faith, God counted him as righteous.” Paul says God did not record this just for Abram. It was for our benefit too, to assure us that God will also count us as righteous — if we believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. Faith is not passive assent; it is total dependence on God to deliver on His promise. Faith compels us to obey God because He is worthy.
