Scholars have tried to locate the geographic center of the earth. Some think it’s in Egypt at the Great Giza Pyramid. Others say it’s in Turkey. Still say others say it’s in Iraq or Jerusalem. Perhaps no one really knows where the earth’s center lies. What we do know is that Jerusalem has a very special place in the heart and plans of God. Our Lord died and rose again in that city, making it the earthly birthplace of our faith. The Holy Spirit gave birth to the Church in Jerusalem. That same Spirit now indwells and empowers believers to carry the Gospel all over the world. Most notably, the Bible portrays New Jerusalem as the city where God will dwell with His people. Even though the language may be symbolic, it shows that Jerusalem will be a focus of God’s future activities. So it does not surprise us to read this by the prophet Isaiah, Chapter 66: “Rejoice with Jerusalem! Be glad with her, all you who love her and all you who mourn for her. Drink deeply of her glory even as an infant drinks at its mother’s comforting breasts.” This is what the LORD says: “I will give Jerusalem a river of peace and prosperity. I will comfort you there in Jerusalem as a mother comforts her child. When you see these things, your heart will rejoice.” God has great plans for Jerusalem. Until they unfold, we treat everyone with love, justice, and righteousness.
