Until recently, most people believed the Titanic cruiser sank in 1912 from hitting an iceberg. Scientists now know the ship sank from six very thin slits that began in the ship’s deck below. These almost invisible slits made the ship sink and 1500 people died. Small defects can have major consequences. It’s why Jesus told us to be faithful in small matters. We read His words in Luke Chapter 16: “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? No one can serve two masters.” Jesus said. “For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” The Pharisees, who loved money, heard what Jesus said and scoffed at Him. So Jesus said to them, “You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts.” Honesty and integrity may appear to be inconsequential, but they are vital virtues, not only in our day-to-day relationships. One day each of us will give account to God; He will judge both our motives and our actions. As we submit to God and to His Son, God’s Spirit can help us to be people of integrity.
