A young man left his family and friends to attend school in America. He sacrificed his relationships back home to prepare himself for a better future. He said his mom had prepared him for making critical choices. When as child he wanted toys, she told him, “You may have one or the other, but not both—which will it be?” He said those early choices prepared him to make greater choices as he grew up. Jesus told two stories to illustrate how choices can affect outcomes. We read this in Matthew 13, “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again, and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it.” Jesus made the point that some things are so valuable, they must have top priority. The decision we make today about Him and the kingdom of heaven will have profound results when this life is over. Jesus said the day will come when God will separate the righteous from the wicked; the righteous will enjoy eternal life with God; but the wicked will suffer untold regret and anguish, because they chose to live apart from God. Wise people choose God’s Son as their Savior and Lord.
