Click here. The Preamble of the United Nations says the U.N exists to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, to establish conditions where justice can prevail, and to promote social progress and better living standards. All these are worthy unifying goals. But these were not the goals when ancient Israel began to build the unifying Tower of Babel. We learn in Genesis 11:4 that their motive was to build a great city for themselves with a tower that reached into the sky. They said, “this will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.” But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. “Look!” God said, “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.” In that way, the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. When we build great monuments to ourselves, ignoring God’s moral laws of justice and righteousness, our monuments will one day crumble to nothing.
