Others point to Japan, China, or even Ethiopia. Whatever family has ruled the longest, none can rival the one that began with King David. The record of God’s promise to give David a lasting dynasty is 2 Samuel Chapter 7. David had made plans to build a Temple to the LORD. God told Nathan the prophet to tell David to put a hold on his plans. The LORD intends to make for you a dynasty of kings! God said, “When you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever.” God promised to do three things for David: 1) make his name great; 2) provide a homeland for his people; 3) and give him a dynasty of kings that would never end. Fast forward to Mary, 1,000 years later. The angel told her God had chosen her to bare a son, and God would give him the throne of his father David; he would rule over the house of Jacob forever. Christ came just as the angel said, lived, died, and returned to heaven. Today, He’s physically absent from the earth. Yet one day He will return and, in keeping with God’s promise to David, His rule will never ever end.
