It works to assure us that if we buy 10 gallons of gasoline, we really get 10 gallons; or if we buy a package of corn flakes that says 20 oz that we really get 20 oz. Their job is to keep merchants from cheating us. Honesty has its origin in God. We did not invent it. The Bible stresses this in several places. One of them is Leviticus 19:35-37 “Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight, or volume. Your scales and weights must be accurate. Your containers for measuring dry materials or liquids must be accurate. …You must be careful to keep all of my decrees and regulations by putting them into practice. I am the LORD.” Years later, God indicted the merchants because they failed to be honest. Here are God’s words found it Amos 8:4-5, “You rob the poor and trample down the needy! You cannot wait for the Sabbath day to be over and the religious festivals to end so you can get back to cheating the helpless. You measure out grain with dishonest measures and cheat the buyer with dishonest scales.” God then says, “I will never forget the wicked things you have done!” So even though we do not live in the culture of ancient Israel, or under their covenant, we know what God thinks of corruption in business. God says “I see it, I hate it, and I will judge it at the right time.”
