What do church members expect of a pastor?

Here are 10 traits researchers found church members want in a pastor: someone who loves people, is an effective preacher, has good character, has a good work ethic, has a vision for the church, can lead without dictating, has a positive outlook, does not easily yield to critics, is transparent, and has a heart for evangelism. Years ago, God rejected Saul as a leader and chose David—because, unlike Saul, David had effective leadership traits. We read in 1 Samuel chapter 16, how after Saul disobeyed God, God sent Samuel to anoint one of Jesse’s sons to replace Saul. Samuel took one look at Jesse’s oldest son—tall and handsome—and thought, “Surely this is the LORD’S anointed!” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” The LORD picked David because of his character, formed as a shepherd—his faith in God, his courage, and compassion. Some leaders today aspire to build great monuments in their honor. Yet God looks for those with integrity, faith, vision, courage, and compassion for people. God looks for leaders like David—those with a shepherd’s heart.
