John Mason said, “Regrets look back, worry looks around, but faith looks up.” Oswald Chambers said, “Faith enables a believer to treat the future as present and the invisible as seen.” George Guthrie explains that genuine faith is not just believing something good is going to happen to us, nor is it a blind leap against known facts. Rather, faith is acting on what God has revealed about his will and his character; it is relying on his past actions and his promises for the future. Hebrews 11 explains this about faith: It is “the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” People of faith can say with the psalmist, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge… The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is here among us. He says to us, “Be still, and know that I am God!” So with God as our Father, with the Christ as our Redeemer and Intercessor, and with the Holy Spirit as our constant Companion, we are all set for this world and the one to come.
