Herbert Agar said this about truth: “The truth that makes men free is for the most part the truth which men prefer not to hear.” That was Pilate’s mindset when he asked Jesus, “What is truth?” Since he was unwilling to live by the truth, after asking the question, he immediately left the room. Earlier (John 8:31), Jesus had stated to those who professed faith in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus explained what he meant, because the people thought he meant truth would set them free from chattel slavery. They asked, “What do you mean, ‘You will be set free?” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” By truth, he referred to himself as God’s truth. He sets people free from the bondage of sin. Once they are free, they begin to exhibit the lifestyle Jesus taught and lived—of loving and caring for others, especially the poor. They exhibit the fruit of God’s Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. They foster these values not only in their personal lives but also in their families, churches, and communities.
