Despite this, she became a successful wife, mom, Sunday-School teacher, court interpreter, speaker, and writer. She was able to do all this because her father instilled confidence in her by his example. He migrated to America, and despite many hardships, humiliation, loneliness, and language barriers, he persisted to provide for his family. She learned from her father that the Lord could be her light and salvation. That is what David knew and expressed in Psalm 27. David had confidence in the LORD because God had promised to care for him and David believed God’s promise. People who choose to leave God out of their lives do not have the confidence that believers can have. David was so confident in God’s love for him and God’s care over him that he could ask the question, “Why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?” Confidence can banish fear. David links his confidence with a prayer: He said, “The one thing I ask of the LORD—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in his perfections and meditating in his temple.” David’s desire was to live daily in the presence of God. He knew that trusting and obeying God was the secret of a well-lived life. We can have the same experience as David.
