According to legend, Sarah Winchester was the wife of William Winchester, the man who invented the Winchester rifle. After he died, a psychic told Sarah that her family was cursed by spirits of people killed by the Winchester rifle: Native Americans and soldiers. The psychic told her that to atone for all the deaths the rifle had caused, she had to move west, build a house for herself and the spirits. If she ever stopped building she would die. So with her fortune, she moved west and hired builders to work day and night for 38 years, hoping to free herself of guilt. As Moses ended his days as ancient Israel’s leader, he warned them to worship and obey the LORD. In Deuteronomy Chapter 4, Moses said, “If you break the covenant, the Lord will scatter you among the nations. But if from there you search again for the Lord your God, and if you search for him with all you heart and soul, you will find him. For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant he made with your ancestors.” God has given us a promise as He did to ancient Israel. It’s this: If we turn from our sins with all our hearts and accept His Son as our Savior, He will forgive us and restore us to Himself. This is how we get rid of guilt.
