A mother eagle builds her nest with thorns, broken branches, and sharp rocks; then she covers them with a padding of wool, fur, and feathers to make it soft for her eggs. After eggs hatch, eaglets tend to get content and don’t want to leave. So the mother eagle stirs her nest. She begins pulling up the feathers to make the nest prickly. She wants her eagles to learn to fly. Yet when they tumble from the nest, she scoops down to catch them until they are strong enough to fly on their own. Psalm 91 tells us that God takes care of those who trust Him as their place of refuge. “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you.” Of course this does not mean that the believer will never encounter any difficulty. Other biblical texts make that clear. And C. H. Spurgeon said to the one who belongs to God, “Ill is no ill, but only good in a mysterious form. Losses enrich him, sickness is his medicine, reproach is his honor, and death is his gain.” Yes, God always protects His people; sometimes He keeps us from it; other times, He permits us to pass through trouble to refine our character and increase our faith.
