The purpose of our American judicial system is to guard our liberties. Whether the issue is criminal or civil, we count on the courts to assure us that justice prevails. Judges render decisions at several levels—local, state, and federal. Any ruling by the United States Supreme Court is final, even though a future Court may overturn its own decisions. Judges receive appointments for life so they can be impartial and never fear losing their jobs. Psalm 82 records a word from God for rulers and judges who have the task of rendering justice. It’s clear that God considers all rulers and judges as His agents to administer justice in the world—even those who do not acknowledge Him. Here is what Psalm 82 says: “God presides over heaven’s court; he pronounces judgment on the heavenly beings. How long will you hand down unjust decisions by favoring the wicked? Give justice to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute. Rescue the poor and helpless; deliver them from the grasp of evil people.” We can rejoice that we serve a God who is concerned about justice. Even though the Apostle Paul urges God’s people to resolve certain issues among themselves rather than before civil authorities, we can expect the judge to be fair and impartial when we must go to court.
