Don’t see the audio player? Click here. The TV series, American Greed, publicizes schemes people use to get rich quick. In one, an investment manager started the longest running Ponzi scheme in history. He created a stock trading computer program that promised to deliver an incredible return on money. In another, a con man got four years in prison for leading a massive insurance fraud scheme. In a third, viewers tuned in to watch a live auction show that turned out to be a con artist selling fake art. Schemers like these completely ignore history. True to the biblical proverb, they come to no good end. Proverbs 28:19 says, “The person who chases fantasies ends up in poverty” and “A person who wants quick riches will get into trouble.” A third proverb says, “Greedy people try to get rich quick but don’t realize they’re headed for poverty.” On the other hand, another biblical proverb says, “Those who are honest and work hard succeed.” Of course, these are general principles, which may or may not be true in every situation. Yet it is clear that those who follow get-rich schemes can expect to lose out; and those who live with integrity and work hard are the ones who succeed. In other words, “Crime does not pay, but hard work does.”
