Scott Berkun, a business guru, gives these tips on how to learn from mistakes. He says: take responsibility; try to understand why a mistake was made; identify information that could have avoided the mistake; consider other choices you could have made; identify changes you could make to avoid this mistake again; decide what you will do next time. King Solomon knew his people would sin and make mistakes. So in his prayer to dedicate the Temple he said (1 Kings 8), “LORD, If the skies are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and if they pray toward this Temple and acknowledge your name and turn from their sins because you have punished them, then hear from heaven and forgive the sins of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them to follow the right path.” Solomon knew that continuing to disobey God leads to disaster. So he prayed that his people would learn from their mistakes; yet he also knew that learning only begins when we admit our failures—to God, to others when necessary, and to ourselves.
