We sometimes hear people say the Bible is not reliable. They claim there are contradictions in the Bible, that a loving God would not give orders to slay people, that Bible stories violate laws of nature, or that the Bible contradicts science. One writer even says the Bible is a book of lies, wickedness, and blasphemy. All such baseless claims say more about the people who make the charges than about the Bible itself. They show how far some people are willing to go to avoid being accountable to the God of the Bible. The book itself says that people who deny or ignore what God has revealed lack wisdom and understanding. On the other hand, the author of Psalm 119 takes a different view about the Bible’s reliability. He says, “Your eternal word, O LORD, stands firm in heaven. Your faithfulness extends to every generation, as enduring as the earth you created. Your regulations remain true to this day, for everything serves your plans. I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life.” So while we readily admit we don’t understand everything in the Bible, we are confident that since it is God-breathed, it is utterly trustworthy.
