In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and traveled the country speaking out against slavery. In a meeting where Frederick Douglas spoke, he expressed despair that God had not ended slavery. Sojourner jumped to her feet and shouted, “Frederick, is God dead?” She knew that despite the fiery trials, Black people were enduring, God was alive and freedom would come one day. That was the message God gave His ancient people through Isaiah. Knowing that 70 years in exile would cause many to despair and think God had abandoned them, God prepared this message in advance: “Look and see, for everyone is coming home! Your sons are coming from distant lands; your little daughters will be carried home. Your eyes will shine and your heart will thrill with joy.” In the midst of despair, God had a word of hope. He assured them that He had not abandoned them, even though they were in the midst of a fiery ordeal. God has a similar message of hope for His people today who may be going through trials. To those who really belong to Him by faith in His Son, God says, “I will never leave you; I will never forsake you.”
