We also know that unfaithfulness in marriage can produce untold heartache. That is why God said a man should leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife. Faithfulness in relationships is also one reason God told ancient Israel and us to avoid idolatry. God delivered them from Egyptian slavery and pointed them toward the Promised Land. God stressed that they must not worship the idols of that land. God said if you do, their idols will lead you away from me. Two of the Ten Commandments are these: “You must not have any other god but me. You must not bow down to idols, or worship them, for I the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for other gods.” The worship of God, our Creator, is the path that gives us the greatest joy and inner fulfillment. We read these words of God’s in Exodus 23. “If you serve their gods, you will be caught in the trap of idolatry.” Modern idols are any of those things that stand between God and us. God gives these instructions because He loves us and is looking out for our well-being. The African church father, Augustine, said it well, “We are made by God, for God, and we can never find satisfaction apart from God.”
