Joe Friday often said, “Just the facts, Ma’am.” Knowing that the woman of Samaria needed the facts about her circumstances and what He could do to change them, Jesus gave her the facts. We see in John chapter 4, that she came to the well to draw water—water with which to clean, cook, and most of all to quench her thirst. Yet deep within, her inner spirit was unfulfilled. To help her grasp what He could do to satisfy her inner thirst, Jesus used her known facts about literal water to explain facts about spiritual water. He went from the known to the unknown. He pricked her interest with this fact: “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” Jesus then explained, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” When the woman understood these facts, her logical response was, “Please, sir, give me this water!” And today, unfulfilled people respond to Jesus Christ the same way: “Please, sir, give me this water.”
