John Moore wrote “Burdens are lifted at Calvary. He was visiting a critically injured man in a hospital. After telling him the story from Pilgrim’s Progress of how Christian–the main character–got rid of his heavy burden as he drew near the cross of Christ, Moore explained to the man that Jesus would forgive his sins. The man was so moved by the story that he accepted Christ. Suddenly, these words came to John Moore: “Cast your care on Jesus today, Leave your worry and fear; Burdens are lifted at Calvary. Jesus is very near. Troubled soul, the Savior can feel every heartache and tear. Burdens are lifted at Calvary. Jesus is very near.” John Moore’s chorus echoes Jesus’ words from Matthew 11, “Come to me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and the burden I give is light.” Today’s burdens may be a sinful habit, a stricken conscience, a search for love, a troubled heart caused by health or financial issues, or even a lack of purpose. Whatever the burden, Jesus says, “Come to me and I will give you rest, meaning He will accept you, forgive you, refresh you, give you purpose and make you whole again.
