Prince William and Kate Middleton are the proud parents of a baby boy. Little Prince George is now the third in line to become king in Britain. But British kings don’t have the power they once enjoyed. By contrast, God has declared that Jesus is the absolute ruler over heaven and earth. When He was born, only a few people recognized Him as God’s anointed. One of them was Simeon who lived in Jerusalem. Luke tells us he was righteous and devout, eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. When Mary and Joseph presented the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God saying, ‘Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel.” God gave Simeon the insight to recognize that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah; destined not only to offer salvation to Israel, but to open the door of salvation to all humanity. In addition, God has appointed Him as ruler over His entire creation. Wise people place their faith in Him—not only to enjoy fulfillment in this life, but also because He alone can guarantee their eternal destiny.
