Some come to get an education to go back home to build their own nation. And, yes, some come to escape persecution. When the Patriarch Abram left Ur of the Chaldees, he left for an unknown country at God’s invitation. God promised to begin a new nation through him and use him to bless the entire world. Here are the famous words God spoke to the patriarch, found in Genesis 12:1: “The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.’ So Abram departed as the Lord instructed.” God made a seven-fold promise to Abram: 1) God would make him into a great nation; 2) bless him; 3) make his name great; 4) cause him to be a blessing; 5) bless those who blessed him; 6) curse those who cursed them; 7) and bless all people on earth through him. Through Abram’s offspring, God now gives eternal blessings to all who accept Jesus Christ, His Son, as their Savior.
