A man gazed at a blooming rose and felt deep awe for God’s generosity. He said for us to survive on earth, we have to have things like food, water, air, and sunshine. But he said roses are extra. Their beauty, smell, and color embellish life. A rose shows how generous God is. He gives far more than we require for physical survival. Perhaps that is another reason King David started each day thanking and praising God. In Psalm 108 we read, “My heart is confident in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart! Wake up, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you, LORD, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth.” People who realize they owe their very existence to God do not want to forget it. They take time to express appreciation to God for their life, for their health, for their ability to come and go, and for relatives and friends, and most all for their relationship with God because of Jesus Christ. Grateful people know that an attitude of gratitude paves the way for God to bestow even more blessings. And they don’t wait for Sunday to offer their praise.
