When the host asked him what he did with his expanded his muscles, he didn’t have an answer. He had no purpose in building his body. Thankfully, people who follow Jesus Christ can know why they engage in spiritual building activities. Our Lord explained the purpose of spiritual disciplines to His disciples as recorded in John 15. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted. When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.” So when we remain in close union with Christ by trusting and obeying Him, we will reproduce His likeness of loving and serving others. As we do, we will bring great delight to our Heavenly Father. There can be no higher purpose for living each day.
