Without looking up, he said, “A picture of God.” “But nobody knows what God looks like,” the teacher said. The boy looked her dead in the eye and said, “After I’m finished, they’ll know what He looks like.” Of course, Jesus told us, “God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Yet despite Jesus’ clear revelation about God’s nature, many ignore or neglect the wonderful privilege of communing with God by faith. Since God is Spirit, we can only commune with Him through our spiritual being. God created us with spirit—we are body, soul, and spirit. Our spirits enable us to have fellowship with God. But we can only do that with the help of His Holy Spirit. We receive Him through faith as a gift when we accept Jesus Christ, God’s Son, as our Savior. Here is what we read in Hebrews 11: “It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Numerous examples exist—both in Scripture and in life—to show us how faith in God enables us fulfill His will. And as we carry out the will of God, we discover unspeakable inner joy.
