The story is told of pioneers traveling west in covered wagons drawn by oxen. One day, they saw a raging fire coming toward them. Realizing they might all perish in the flames, one man acted quickly. He set fire to the grass behind them. When the space was burned over, they all moved back into that space. They did not perish because they were standing where the fire had already burned. The story illustrates a biblical truth. The Bible teaches that a day of judgment will come. Our Lord will one day return from heaven as King of Kings. We read these words in 2 Thessalonians chapter 1. “He [Christ] will come with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power.” Sadly, many people deny or ignore what the Bible teaches about our accountability to God. Yet the Bible is clear that each person will give account for our life on earth. The only hope of a good outcome is to be united with God by faith in His Son. In that relationship, we stand where the fire of God’s judgment has already burned. The Scriptures say, those who genuinely “believe in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
