Meharry Medical College is located in Nashville, Tennessee. Forty percent of all African American physicians and dentists get their education at Meharry. The school’s stated mission is simple: to improve health and healthcare of underserved communities. Their stimulus comes from the Master Healer, Jesus Christ. We read in the Gospels that Jesus went about doing good and healing people with various afflictions. One time, He was teaching a crowd gathered in a house when suddenly, the roof opened up and four men lowered their paralyzed friend right in front of Him. Jesus realized the man had both a spiritual and a physical problem. He addressed the spiritual first by telling him, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Later Jesus said, “Take up your bed and go home because you are healed.” Many people in our world have serious physical hurts. Life expectancy in some parts of the world is less than 50 years. Many children die for lack clean water or a net to shield them from mosquito bites. In our cities, far too many youth die for lack of nurture and violence. God is concerned about sustaining physical life, even as He is concerned about giving us eternal life.
