Mark Twain reportedly said, “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” Knowing the value of a father’s wisdom can keep a young man from costly mistakes. But recognizing and accepting God’s wisdom found in the Bible is far more rewarding. Psalm 119 has 176 verses—each verse celebrates the benefits of God’s Word. It is sad how some people ignore the Bible until they get their tail caught in a vise. But notice how the psalmist values God’s Word. He uses various synonyms to honor their value. He says, “Teach me your decrees. Help me understand the meaning of your commandments, and I will meditate on your wonderful deeds. I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word. Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing your instructions. I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by your regulations. I cling to your laws. LORD, don’t let me be put to shame! I will pursue your commands, for you expand my understanding.” The psalmist knew that God’s Word is a gold mine of wisdom and guidance. Those who take time to mine the gold discover great riches.
