Lott Carey was the first African American missionary to Africa. Back in 1815, this former slave sailed for Sierra Leone and later moved to Liberia to serve his people. The work he began continues today through the Lott Carey Foundation. Their stated mission is to extend the Christian witness around the world. Through prayer partnership, financial support, and technical assistance, they come alongside of indigenous communities to support ministries of evangelism, compassion, empowerment, and advocacy. Besides Carey himself, men like the Apostle John inspire them. Notice what the elderly apostle wrote to his friend Gaius found in John’s third letter: “Dear friend … some of the traveling teachers recently returned and made me very happy by telling me about your faithfulness and that you are living according to the truth. I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth. … They have told the church here of your loving friendship. Please continue providing for such teachers in a manner that pleases God. … We ourselves should support them so that we can be their partners as they teach the truth.” Today, just as John’s friend Gaius did, and the Lott Carey Foundation still does, we should support outreach efforts that communicate Christ and His kingdom.
