E. M. Kelly says the difference between a boss and leader is this: A boss says, Go; a leader says, “Let’s Go. General Eisenhower used a string to illustrate leadership. He placed a string on a table and said, “If you push this string, it won’t go anywhere; but if you pull it, it will follow you anywhere you wish.” Then he’d say, “It’s the same in leading people. They will follow the person who leads by example.” There has been no greater person to lead by example than Jesus Christ has. In fact, He has turned the thinking of the world upside down. In the Upper Room before He died, He gave His disciples a powerful lesson in leadership. They were squabbling over who among them was the greatest. Jesus said, ‘In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called friends of the people,’ But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.” Now not only did Jesus teach this, He promptly exemplified what He said. He submitted to the horrible indignity of death by crucifixion on a cross. He proved beyond doubt that He cared for others. True leadership is not just having a thirst for power. It is a desire to lead others in doing much more than they would otherwise be able to do.
