In 1900, Isaac Cline was the weatherman in Galveston, Texas. He assured people in the city that the storm coming their way was mild. Since the city had never had a severe storm before, people went about their life as usual. But the weatherman was wrong. A severe storm came and 6,000 people died. The Bible teaches that life after death will be disastrous for people who die without having a right relationship with God. They will spend eternity away from the presence of God. According to the Bible, we all enter the world disconnected from God. Unless we choose to accept God’s remedy for salvation, when we exit life, by default, we will have chosen our destiny. Many choose to ignore this dire weather forecast — just as people in Galveston did. But just as they paid the ultimate price for ignoring the storm, so according to the Bible, those who choose to ignore God’s invitation will pay an enormous price — separation from God forever. John 3:16 concisely explains God’s plan: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him would not perish but have eternal life.” Those who accept God’s Son are relieved to know that God has forgiven their sins; that God’s Spirit will enable them to live productive lives now, and when this life is over, they will spend eternity with God.
