When he returned home from his trip to the moon, somebody asked astronaut Duke if he felt free to break the rules and explore the moon’s surface. “Not at all,” he said, because every event is timed right down to the split second. If I didn’t follow the plan, I could be left on the moon with no way to get home.” If an astronaut needs to follow the rules for his own well-being, surely we cannot flaunt God’s laws without consequences. That’s why Zechariah urged his people to quit their religious sham and practice genuine social justice toward people in his day. We read this in Zech. Ch 7: “This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Your ancestors refused to listen to this message. That is why the LORD of Heaven’s Armies was so angry with them. Since they refused to listen when I called to them, I would not listen when they called to me, says the LORD of Heavens Armies.” In every age, God calls His people to be just and fair toward everyone, but especially the poor, the needy, and the defenseless. If we ignore God’s call, we can expect God’s judgment—in his own time and in his own way.
