A friend of mine was uneasy about undergoing surgery. The surgeon sensed his fear and said to him, with assurance and authority, “I am a surgeon!” My friend later said those assuring words from the surgeon put him at ease. What this surgeon’s words did for my friend is what God’s words, more profoundly, did for Moses. Moses had just told Pharaoh to let God’s people go. Instead of doing so, the king made them suffer more. Moses and the people now felt hopeless. God then gave these assuring words to Moses, Exodus 6:2: “Say to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt.’” God’s word gave them hope. Today, God gives us hope with His promises. He says to all of us who accept His Son as our Savior, He will redeem us from the clutches of sin, Satan, and eternal death. He will adopt us as His dear children and enable us to live fulfilling lives; and He will give us an eternal inheritance—all that He is and has. God will deliver on these promises just as He delivered on His word to His ancient people.
