Expecting the earth to soon self-destruct, they wanted to escape. History records many false predictions. The Bible is our only reliable source of prophecy. Example: King David predicted that one of his descendants would assume the twin title of priest and king. One thousand years before Christ was born, David wrote in Psalm 110 “The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet. The LORD will extend your powerful kingdom from Jerusalem; you will rule over your enemies. The LORD has taken an oath and will not break his vow: You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” One thousand years later, Jesus was born. He was a master teacher and miracle worker. His enemies crucified him, but he arose again and returned to heaven. Speaking of Jesus, Peter, in Acts Chapter 2 said of King David’s prediction, “[he, David] was looking into the future, and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection.” The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is both human and divine. Divinely speaking, He is the Son of God. Humanly speaking, He is the son of King David. We gladly confess Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord.
The group that came to be known as Heaven’s Gate never said they were “hitching a ride on a comet” and in fact they stated that it was “irrelevant” to them whether or not the comet Hale-Bopp had a companion. They also never made any “false predictions” because they didn’t make any predictions. They felt that earth’s civilization was due for a recycling but they never set any kind of date and Do even stated that it could “take 1,000 years”.
