Years ago, a father in Romania assured his young son he would always protect him. Then one day at school, an earthquake struck and buried his son with dozens of other children. The father rushed to the school, dug all night to reach his son. When he spied him and called him to him to come out, his son said, “No, dad, let the other kids come first; I know you will get me.” The son later said to his dad, “I told the other kids not to worry because I knew you would not fail to come find us.” Ancient Israel had faith in God as they began a second time to rebuild their Temple. After they started, the local governor tried to stop them. He came, inspected the work, and asked them, “Who gave you permission to rebuild and restore this Temple?” Here is how they answered the governor, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the Temple that was built here many years ago.” These Jewish leaders reaffirmed their faith. Even though they had failed God by sinning and brought on the exile, they still clung to God’s promise through Isaiah that God would not abandon them, but would enable them to rebuild their place of worship. There is a lesson here for us. Even after we fail our Lord, when we confess our sin, and return to God, He is faithful to forgive, and restore us to His favor.
