It is no secret that in many African American communities, bias exists in education, housing, and jobs. Thankfully, some of God’s people of all ethnic groups are working tirelessly to eliminate inequities. Followers of Jesus Christ who work for justice do it in obedience to our Lord. We know that a reward is awaiting God’s people, one so enormous that it pales against setbacks and stumbling blocks today. The Apostle Peter has an encouraging word for those who suffer, toil, and work on behalf of Christ. In 1 Peter 1 he writes, “We live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.” So today God’s people persevere in their efforts to eliminate injustice of all sorts—both in our country and elsewhere—because we know it pleases God, and we know what the end will be.
