Dr. Moussa Coulibaly is a native of Burkina Faso, West Africa. He came to America to study and went home to establish schools for his people in Burkina Faso. Since he went home in 2000, he has established four schools that serve 1,500 students; he conducts a leadership training institute for adults. In addition, he plants trees to conserve land, and distributes food and medicine to the needy. Dr. Coulibaly not only presents the message of salvation, he seeks to meet all the needs of underserved people. Christ’s followers did this from the beginning of the church. The first apostles helped the needy as a vital part of their mission. One example is the Apostle Paul. He wrote in Romans 15, “I must go to Jerusalem to take a gift to the believers there. For you see, the believers in Macedonia and Achaia have eagerly taken up an offering for the poor among the believers in Jerusalem. They were glad to do this, because they feel they owe a real debt to them. Since the Gentiles received the spiritual blessings of the Good News from the believers in Jerusalem, they feel the least they can do in return is to help them financially.” Today, huge numbers of poor and hungry people live in the world. In America, 46 million people live in poverty. Worldwide, five million children die from hunger-related illnesses each year. Hunger leads to learning disabilities, mental retardation, blindness, and premature death. A lot of work remains to be done in reducing poverty in our world. And certainly God’s people can have a part in doing so.
