But he said, “I must see what the minister’s fee be before Phoebe be Phoebe Beebee.” Ah, tongue twisters may be fun, but Scripture twisters are not. Scripture twisters are those people who twist what the Bible says to promote their own philosophy or lifestyle. The Bible warns us about them. Here’s a warning from the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy Chapter 4, “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.” Scripture twisters are not simply people who make mistakes in interpreting the Bible. Rather, they deliberately add to or subtract from what the Bible teaches. They often distort what the Bible teaches about the person of Christ Himself—the teaching that Christ is fully God and fully man. They may challenge His sufficiency as God’s only way of salvation. They typically do it to draw people to themselves rather than leading them to Christ. We can guard ourselves from Scripture twisters by being faithful students of God’s word, by relying on faithful Bible teachers, and by relying upon God’s Spirit to be our Teacher and Guide.
