Some people are still skeptical that the earth is getting warmer, but most now accept the conclusion of scientists that the earth’s temperature, in fact, is rising. Videos of melting glaciers are quite convincing. Based on these scientific studies, it seems prudent that we take actions that can slow the process. Yet we need not fear that the earth will become a total wasteland. That’s because the Bible teaches God has plans for the earth and for His people. We read these words in Psalm 104, “You placed the world on its foundation so it would never be moved. You clothed the earth with floods of water, water that covered even the mountains. At your command, the water fled; at the sound of your thunder, it hurried away. Mountains rose and valleys sank to the levels you decreed. Then you set a firm boundary for the seas, so that they would never again cover the earth. O LORD, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom, you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.” Of course, we do not know all the methods God may use to renew and sustain the earth. What we know is that God is sovereign and faithful to keep His promises. He will fulfill His plans for the earth in His own time. Our task is to draw near to God; live to please Him, and do our part to sustain the earth God has charged us to care for.
