A popular saying is that when you know better you do better. It is true that knowledge usually precedes doing—we seldom do what is right unless we know what is right. Yet far too often, we don’t act on what we know. History shows that we often fail to do what we know is right. That was certainly true in ancient Israel. God chose them and taught them how to live productive lives. Yet they ignored God and served idols. They confirmed what we all do—we fail to live up to what we know. It is why God sent His Son to pay our sin debt and provide a better way to live productively here on earth. Based on God’s grace in giving us salvation, the Apostle Paul, in Titus Chapter 2, urged his associate to teach God’s people to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures, and to live in this present, evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God—even as we look forward to Christ’s return, that wonderful day “when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed.” The changed lifestyle faith in Christ produces in us is not merely our adoption of a new code of conduct—something we try to do in our own strength. Rather, God’s Spirit lives inside of us. He gives us wisdom and power to do what is good in the world.
