Experts say product packaging is deceptive if it makes buyers think they are getting more than they are, or getting a higher quality than they are. Producers may use words like gourmet, all-natural, lightly-sweetened, when in fact you don’t get all that. Such tactics are to give the buyer a perception that is not true. It’s a subtle way of gaining wealth at the expense of the unwary. The Bible warns us never to cheat others by using unfair scales and measures. Some would call this another form of hypocrisy, which God also condemns because it ultimately hurts both the deceiver and the deceived. Here are a few proverbs that convey God’s disdain for hypocritical practices. Proverbs 21: “People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart. The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices. Haughty eyes, a proud heart and evil actions are all sin. Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty. Wealth created by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist and a deadly trap.” So rather than risk cheating the public and losing, a producer might be more profitable by giving people more than they pay for.
