Click here. The mission statement of Compassion International is this: “Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from the spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.” Mission statements like this capture the essence of Jesus’ healing work while He was on earth. Here is one of His healing miracles found in Matthew chapter 9. “Two blind men followed along behind him, shouting, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” they went right into the house where he was staying, and Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I can make you see?” “Yes, Lord,” they told him, “we do.” Then he touched their eyes and said, “Because of your faith, it will happen.” Then their eyes were opened, and they could see!” By healing people, Jesus fulfilled the predictions of what the Messiah would do. Miracles confirmed His identity as Messiah. But Jesus also healed because He had compassion for people. Mathew says, “When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Christ’s teaching and examples tell us that He wants us to be concerned about people’s spiritual condition, but also to have compassion about their total well-being.
