They do it because they know when we neglect children, we leave a negative impact, not only on the children themselves, but also upon society as a whole. All through the Bible, God makes it abundantly clear that He is concerned for children, and wants us, His people, to be concerned as well. God’s message to exiled ancient Israel includes assurance that He is vitally interested in the welfare of children. Here is what we read in Isaiah 40: “‘Your God is coming!’ Yes, the Sovereign LORD is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes. He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.” God’s concern for the young is reflected in His Word that He will carry the little lambs in his arms. He shows his concern for the parents of little children by saying, “He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.” All of this is to say God is deeply concerned about the way we treat children. Those of us who are followers of Christ must take God’s concern very seriously.
