According to eye experts, cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 55; cataract surgery is one of the popular ways to correct the problem. In that procedure, the surgeon removes clouded lens from the eye and replaces it with a clear lens. The result is often remarkable. Some patients see far better than they ever did before. As Jesus was about to leave the earth, He explained some things the Holy Spirit would do in the world when He arrived. Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as an Advocate or Counselor. Jesus said: “It is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sins in that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged” (from vv. 7–11). Today, our Lord expects us to love people, to work for justice in the world, and to share the Good News of salvation that comes from faith in Him. When we do our part, God’s Spirit does His work. He opens the inner eyes of those who hear us and watch us. Our job is to witness with our lives and lips—His job is to bring conviction that leads to repentance and eternal life.
