Transmitting vision and values was on the mind of the Apostle Paul as he penned his second letter to Timothy, his son in the ministry. Paul sensed his end was near and wanted to encourage Timothy to carry on the work of proclaiming the truth he had taught. Paul knew the message he proclaimed did not originate with him; it had its origin in God long ago. Even then, God planned to offer people the gift of eternal life through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus. For Paul, God’s eternal plan elevated this message far above anything Paul could imagine. He said Christ broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through this Good News. It is why Paul could say, “I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.” To keep Christ’s message burning brightly for coming generations, we must model this message with a godly life, teach it to reliable, trustworthy people, and as Paul added: “Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.”
